Cast Set For Port Arthur Massacre Film

Caleb Landry Jones, Judy Davis, Essie Davis and Anthony LaPaglia have joined the cast of “Nitram,” the new movie from “Macbeth,” “Assassin’s Creed” and “True History Of The Kelly Gang” director Justin Kurzel.

Returning to the dark true Australian crime genre in which he broke through with 2011’s “Snowtown,” Kurzel’s new film will deal with the 1996 Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania.

The story will analyse events leading up to one of the darkest chapters in the country’s history in an attempt to understand why and how the atrocity occurred. 35 people were killed and 23 wounded by the sole gunman Martin Bryant, and the incident led to sweeping and transformative gun control law changes within the country – reforms that remain in place today.

Shaun Grant (“Snowtown,” “Berlin Syndrome”) has written the screenplay and filming is underway in Geelong, Victoria. Nick Batzias and Virginia Whitwell are producing and Madman Entertainment will release the project theatrically.

The movie is expected to premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival next year ahead of a rollout on Australian VOD service Stan simultaneously with its theatrical release.
