Oprah Winfrey has unveiled the full key cast of the upcoming film based on the 2005 Tony-winning Broadway musical “The Color Purple,” which itself was based on Alice Walker’s seminal 1982 novel.
The story focuses on three young Black women and the hardships that they collectively experience in the early twentieth-century American South.
The musical adaptation will incorporate magic realism into its story, allowing us inside the imagination of the main character Celie.
The new film will star Fantasia Taylor as Celie, Colman Domingo as Mister, Danielle Brooks as Sofia, Halle Bailey as Nettie, Corey Hawkins as Harpo, H.E.R. as Squeak, and Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery.
Blitz Bazawule directs from a script by Marcus Gardley. Winfrey is producing alongside Scott Sanders, Steven Spielberg and Quincy Jones with shooting to begin in Georgia next month.
The new “The Color Purple” is set for a December 20th 2023 theatrical release.
