Filmmaker Nancy Meyers is best known these days for writing and directing relationship comedies featuring generally older upscale protagonists than you usually see in most rom-coms.
They’re played by big stars and always have amazing kitchens that architects and interior designers drool over. Among her works are the likes of “The Holiday,” “It’s Complicated,” “Something’s Gotta Give,” and “What Women Want” while her most recent film was 2015’s “The Intern”.
Now she’s back to write, direct and produce a new Netflix feature comedy currently known as “Paris Paramount” with Scarlett Johansson reportedly circling the lead role according to THR.
In addition, Penelope Cruz, Owen Wilson, and Michael Fassbender are also said to be eyeing the project to take on roles in the film.
The story reportedly follows a talented young writer/director who falls in love with a producer, with the pair ending up making several successful films before calling it quits romantically and professionally.
The two are forced back together, however, when a great new project arises, and they find themselves teamed up again and having to deal with high stakes and volatile stars.
The big surprise is the project is currently eyeing a budget in the $130-150 million range – potentially making it the most expensive romantic comedy to ever come out of Hollywood. The trade indicates the studio and filmmakers are “going back and forth over costs”.
The subject matter is not unfamiliar to Meyers who had a longtime romantic and professional relationship with fellow writer-director-producer Charles Shyer. The pair’s collaborations yielded such iconic films as “Private Benjamin,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Father of the Bride” before they split.
