This year marks the 40th anniversary of legendary filmmaker John Carpenter’s “Escape from New York”.
The high-concept sci-fi action classic introduced the world to Kurt Russell’s iconic eye-patched gruff talking character Snake Plissken. Russell reprised the role fifteen years later for Carpenter’s follow-up “Escape from L.A.” which was less well regarded but still has its fans.
Recently, Carpenter spoke to Total Film (via Games Radar) and said he could see two more stories in which Snake Plissken might return:
“He’s a character that Kurt is passionately fond of. He convinced me to do the sequel. There’s probably a third or maybe even fourth story about Snake. I don’t know if we’ll ever make it, but I think that he deserves it.”
Carpenter hasn’t directed in over a decade, though says in this interview he’s “open to it” should a script come along he likes. Even so, the now 70-year-old Russell is possibly too old to play the character again.
Still, it doesn’t mean more Snake can’t be told even if it’s in another form ala Russell & Carpenter’s other iconic creation Jack Burton from “Big Trouble in Little China” who has been in comics.
At last report a year ago, “The Invisible Man” helmer Leigh Whannell was developing a reboot of “Escape from New York” but there’s been no real news on that front.
