A sequel to “Captain Marvel” is officially in the works.
Rising screenwriter Megan McDonnell, a staff writer on the upcoming Marvel TV series “WandaVision,” is in final negotiations to pen a script for a follow-up to the 2019 film “Captain Marvel” which starred Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson.
Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who co-wrote and directed the initial fil, will not return to helm the sequel but are in talks to remain with Marvel and could direct a possible Disney+ series.
Marvel plans to find a female filmmaker for “Captain Marvel 2” and is said to be targeting a potential 2022 release. The new story will reportedly move the setting from the 1990s of the original movie to the present day.
Nicole Perlman, Meg LeFauve, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Boden and Fleck all took a shot at the script for the first film, the hope is there will be fewer cooks in the kitchen this time.
The first film generated over $1.1 billion worldwide.
