The Cannes Film Festival organisers have announced that the famed event is expected to proceed as planned from May 12th-23rd.
Their statement arrives in the wake of yesterday’s cancellation of the annual Cannes TV market, MIPTV, among other high profile events. MIPTV was scheduled to take place in Cannes from March 30th-April 2nd but has been pulled in the wake of concerns over the coronavirus.
The festival and Cannes film market said in a statement: “We understand the concern that has been expressed following the postponement of Cannes Series and the cancellation of MIPTV, but as of today nothing indicates that the Cannes Film Festival will not take place. The Cannes Film Festival staff, Thierry Frémaux and the selection committee are all currently working on the organization of the event.”
The Cannes Fest lineup press conference remains scheduled for April 16th in Paris. Last week the French government temporarily banned some gatherings of more than 5,000 people due to the global outbreak, while a few minutes ago France’s health minister announced he has extended the ban for gatherings of more than 5,000 people in confined spaces to May 31st – raising more concerns about the festival.
France has more than 250 cases of the virus and Cannes itself recorded its first case last week.
