After a several year absence, Oscar-winning filmmaker Cameron Crowe (“Almost Famous,” “Jerry Maguire”) is readying a return to filmmaking as he has reportedly been developing a film about legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell reports Above the Line.
Crowe is set to write and direct the project which he’s been developing with Mitchell for the past two years. Greg Mariotti will produce.
The project is described as “not a traditional biopic in the conventional sense of the word, nor is it a documentary. Instead, it’s akin to an autobiography.” It’s not clear if Crowe will cast one actress or multiple actresses to play Mitchell at various points in her life.
Mitchell is considered one of the most influential folk singers and greatest songwriters in history. She’s won ten Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, with her 1971 album “Blue” often considered one of the greatest of all time.
Mitchell was also the subject of Crowe’s last cover story for Rolling Stone when he was a journalist for the magazine and the pair have remained friends for many years.
Crowe most recently created Showtime’s “Roadies” series which was cancelled after a single season in 2016. His most recent film was 2015’s “Aloha”.
