Callina Liang, most recently seen on Soderbergh’s “Presence” and Apple TV+ series “Foundation,” has landed the female lead role of Chun-Li in the new live-action “Street Fighter” movie.
Capcom is heavily involved in the new take on a franchise which began life as a 1987 arcade game but took off in 1991 with the release of “Street Fighter II”.
Multiple sequels followed, and the infamous film adaptation in 1994 with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, Kylie Minogue and Ming-Na Wen as Chun Li. A second and lower-budgeted film adaptation in 2009 focused on Chun Li with Kristin Kreuk playing her.
In the games, Chun-Li is a skilled martial artist and Interpol officer – and remains one of the most iconic characters of the franchise.
The cast currently includes Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Jason Momoa as Akuma, Roman Reigns as Akuma, and Orville Peck as Vega.
“Talk to Me” directors Danny and Michael Philippou dropped out of the film in February while filmmaker Kitao Sakurai (“Twisted Metal,” “The Eric Andre Show”) has taken over.
