California Cinemas Can Open This Friday

Yesterday came the news from the California Department of Public Health that cinemas in California could re-open as early as this Friday (June 12th) as COVID-19 lockdown restrictions begin to lift.

To re-open though, strict social distancing measures have to remain in place for at least the first two weeks according to a new industry guidance document issued by the state of California. A host of other safety measures are also recommended.

Initially cinemas must limit capacity to 25%, or no more than 100 people per auditorium – whichever is less. If that goes well, the rule is expected to relax after about two weeks – enough time for exhibitors to prepare for Chris Nolan’s “Tenet”.

So how many will actually open though? Reportedly the main chains like won’t be opening due to a lack of product and needed time to prep including restocking concessions and building up safety supplies. The 25% capacity limit is also seen as unsustainable, with many likely waiting until 50% capacity is allowed.
