Boutique SVOD service BritBox has, until now, been known for its archive content. This week they’ve announced a slate of four upcoming original series with some notable names attached.
One is six-part murder mystery series “Magpie Murders” based on “Foyle’s War” creator Anthony Horowitz’s bestselling novel and co-produced with PBS Masterpiece. The ‘novel within a novel’ story revolves around the character Susan Ryeland, an editor who is given an unfinished manuscript of author Alan Conway’s latest novel, but has little idea it will change her life.
Next is the previously anounced “A Spy Among Friends” which is based on Ben Macintyre’s best-selling novel and stars Dominic West and Damian Lewis as the most famous of the ‘Cambridge Five’ – the Soviet moles within British intelligence who leaked secrets to the Soviet Union.
Jared Harris, Cush Jumbo, Billy Howle and Nathaniel Parker lead the cast of five-part revenge thriller “The Beast Must Die” about a grieving mother who infiltrates the life of the man she believes killed her son. Dome Karukoski (“Tolkien,” “Tom of Finland”) helms the series based on a novel by Nicholas Blake and co-produced with New Regency.
Finally there’s “Crime,” a new series that will see “Trainspotting” author Irvine Welsh adapt his own novel of the same name. Dougray Scott will star as detective inspector Ray Lennox who is investigating the disappearance of a schoolgirl while battling his own personal demons.
