Brett Ratner is in negotiations to direct while David Elliot & Paul Lovett have been brought on to rewrite the script for the “Midnight Run” sequel at Universal Pictures says Deadline.
The profanity-laced original 1988 action-comedy road movie starred Robert De Niro as a bounty hunter on a cross-country journey attempting to bring back his latest catch, an embezzler (Charles Grodin).
Though not a major hit, the film was critically well-received and has scored a strong following in the two subsequent decades since its release.
Elliot & Lovett (“Four Brothers,” “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”) will re-write an earlier script by Timothy Dowling (“Role Models”) which teams De Niro’s character with a young comedic foil.
De Niro remains attached to reprise his role and will produce along with Ratner and Jane Rosenthal.
