Netflix and the filmmakers behind the satirical special “The First Temptation of Christ,” which depicts a gay Jesus Christ, have come under legal fire in Rio de Janeiro.
It began as Associated Press intially reported that judge Benedicto Abicair ruled that the special is to be removed from Netflix in Brazil due to its content. Abicair says the removal of the program: “is beneficial not only to the Christian community but to Brazilian society which is mostly Christian”.
Now, Brazil’s Supreme Court president Dias Toffoli has overturned Abicair’s ban, calling it unjust and against ideals of freedom of speech, and that satire cannot weaken the values of the Christian faith.
On Christmas Eve, the headquarters of the production company behind the film, Porta dos Fundos, was hit with a gasoline bomb due to the controversial special. Netflix hasn’t released a statement about either ruling at present.
