Bravo Plans “Queer as Folk” Remake

Bravo has reportedly won a competitive bid to develop a contemporary reimagining of iconic 1999 UK series “Queer as Folk” which launched the careers of Charlie Hunnam and “Game of Thrones” star Aidan Gillen.

The pair starred alongside Craig Kelly as three gay men living in Manchester in the series which ran for just ten episodes. The series was famous at the time for showing gay men unapologetically living their lives including graphic sex and drug use. Hunnam made history in the pilot episode when he was on the receiving end of the first depicted rim job on television.

A Canadian remake for Showtime followed in 2000 with that running for five seasons. Former “Doctor Who” showrunner and “A Very English Scandal” creator Russell T. Davies created the original series and is onboard the new project as an executive producer. Stephen Dunn is attached to write, direct, and executive produce.

The new version of the show will feature entirely new characters in a new setting with the original British series serving as its template. The story follows a group of club-going friends who find support in the gay community following a tragedy.
