Former “Superman Returns” and “Legends of Tomorrow” star Brandon Routh is set to guest star on an upcoming episode of the “Quantum Leap” revival in a key role.
Routh will play Naval Commander Alexander Augustine, father of Caitlin Bassett’s Addison Augustine (basically the revival’s version of Dean Stockwell’s Al). The episode titled “SOS” is set during a war games exercise in 1989.
Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee) leaps into the body of a sailor onboard a naval warship where he must navigate a dangerous rescue mission and contend with his commanding officer Alexander – who is kind of his father-in-law.
Routh said in a statement: “Growing up watching Quantum Leap, it was an honor to portray such a pivotal character in Addison’s life. Ray [Lee] and Caitlin [Bassett] are a fantastic duo and I loved being a part of the QL team. As an Iowan, it was also exciting to film on the USS Iowa.”
Lee previously indicated the episode will see Addison have some closure with her father in the episode which was shot onboard an active battleship and is said to have a very cinematic air.
The news comes as writer, actor and director Shakina Nayfack recently told TV Line that the ‘waiting room’ concept from the original “Quantum Leap” series, where the consciousness of the host body goes whilst it is being possessed by a leaper, doesn’t exist in the revival: “I think the waiting room is dead. I think the waiting room is Quantum Leap of the 1980s and 1990s, and we have a different way of expressing where the Leap Host goes during the leap.”
Mason Alexander Park, Nanrisa Lee, and Ernie Hudson co-star in the series which has already been renewed for a second season.
