“True Detective: Night Country” and “The Parenting” actor Brandon Flynn has scored the role of the late James Dean in the upcoming romance drama “Willie and Jimmy Dean”.

The biopic is based on screenwriter William Bast’s 2006 memoir “Surviving James Dean”. The book follows Bast meeting Dean at a UCLA theater program with the pair becoming roommates, friends and eventually lovers.

Bast claims they kept their fling private to avoid hurting Dean’s career while the rising star had relationships with female stars with Bast hopeful he and Dean would soon live together again.

Of course, five years after meeting Bast, Dean died in a car accident in 1955 at just 24 years old. His two most famous films, “Rebel Without a Cause” and “Giant,” were released posthumously.

Guy Guido (“Madonna and the Breakfast Club”) pens and directs the film which is set from the first meeting between Bast and Dean to the actor’s death and tackles their evolving relationship and Bast coming to terms with himself during the 1950s.

Guido calls it a “tender and sometimes tragic story” and aims to avoid a sensationalist approach while humanizing Dean.
