Kenneth Branagh’s black-and-white, semi-autobiographical drama “Belfast” took the top prize of the TIFF People’s Choice Award on Saturday night.

Other film winners were “The Rescue” for documentary, while Julia Ducournau’s Cannes winner “Titane” landed the ‘Midnight Madness’ award. Musician Dionne Warwick also landed a special tribute award.

In the acting categories, both Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”) and Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) landed the top honors while Denis Villeneuve won best director for “Dune”.

The “Belfast” win affirms the film’s status as a major player and potential front runner in this year’s awards race. “The Power of the Dog,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” “Dune,” “Spencer,” “King Richard,” “CODA,” “The French Dispatch” and “Mass,” also sit high on experts prediction list and many are awaiting “Licorice Pizza,” “House of Gucci,” “Nightmare Alley,” “Don’t Look Up” and “West Side Story” to screen.
