Box-Office: “Wick” Soars, “Shazam” Plummets

Lionsgate

The fourth entry in the “John Wick” franchise cut through the competition this weekend, pulling in a highly impressive $73.5 million in its opening weekend – easily beating projections.

The film has boasted fantastic reviews – 95% for both critics and audience on Rotten Tomatoes with a respective 8.2/10 and 4.7/5 average score. In addition, it pulled in a ‘A’ CinemaScore and had the biggest opening of any R-rated film post-pandemic.

It’s easily the best start of the franchise and continues its trend of opening bigger with each entry ($14M, $30M, $57M for the previous three). Overseas the film took in a further $64 million from offshore markets – bringing its global tally to $137.5 million.

Though it cost over $100 million to produce, the film is well on its way to proving a success story for Lionsgate and they are expecting a large multiple with a long life for the film over the coming weeks.

The news wasn’t so rosy for “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” which slid to second place with $9.7 million – a dismal 69% drop in its second weekend. With a $110 million production budget, the film has only earned $46 million domestically after two weeks.

It joins “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” as another superhero effort the audience rejected. That film has slipped to sixth and pulled in just $2.42 million this weekend. It sits at $465 million globally and won’t match the first two “Ant-Man” films which made $519 million and $622 million respectively.

“Scream VI” came in third with $8.4 million in its third weekend, the film now sitting on a solid $139.2 million internationally. “Creed III” was fourth with $8.36 million domestically this weekend and a total global tally of $245.8 million so far. “65” rounded out the top five with $3.2 million and sits at $41.8 million globally.

Next weekend sees the arrival of “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” hitting the Easter weekend after.
