Box-Office: “Fantastic Four” Just Shy Of Superman

Marvel

Sunday numbers are now coming in and Marvel & Disney’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is on track to earn $118 million domestically and a further $100 million overseas for a worldwide opening weekend of $218 million.

Domestic numbers are coming in a little lighter than Friday estimates suggested after a steeper than expected 42% drop on Saturday – far more than the 33% drop of “Superman,” 22% drop of “Thunderbolts” and 36% drop of “Deadpool & Wolverine”.

“Superman” opened to $220 million worldwide – 125M domestic/95M overseas, which gives it the slight advantage. “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” appeared to be a little front-loaded as Marvel fans raced out to see this, which pushed up preview and Friday night numbers.

Still, the film is doing very well, even as it’s not quite drawing the family audiences in the kind of numbers “Superman” did a few weeks back. On the flipside, it is doing better with the 35 and older crowd than anticipated.

The film snagged an A- CinemaScore, same as “Superman” and “Thunderbolts”.
Coming in second is “Superman” with $24.8 million domestic, “Jurassic World: Rebirth” in third with $13 million, “F1” in fourth with $6.2 million, and “Smurfs” in fifth with $5.4 million. Both “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Eddington” plummeted 60% and 62% in their second weekends respectively.

Meanwhile, “Superman” and “F1″ both passed $500 million worldwide, while Jurassic World Rebirth” passed $718 million worldwide this weekend.
