With National Cinema Day underway and tickets for films at $4 each, the final box-office results are still to come tomorrow morning.
In the meantime, estimates are already in and as of a few hours ago, Sony Pictures’ “Gran Turismo” looks to be crossing the finish line first with $17.3 million for its domestic opening weekend. It has racked up $36.5 million overseas so far and dropped just 28% from previous weekend openings – a good sign that people are liking it.
It’ll edge ahead of the sixth weekend of “Barbie” which Warners is saying will come in at $17.1 million domestically. The film’s worldwide haul sits at $1.34 billion and is now just $1 million shy of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” to become Warners’ biggest hit ever globally.
The DC Comics adaptation “Blue Beetle” is set to come in third with $12.7 million, a drop of just 49%, which is very good for a superhero film. The film isn’t doing as well overseas, where its second weekend was down to $10 million. Globally the film has made $81.8 million so far.
Fourth is “Oppenheimer” with $9 million domestically. The film’s worldwide haul to date stands at $777.2 million and is on track to cross $800 million in the near future. Christopher Nolan himself travelled to China this past week to promote the film’s launch this coming Wednesday, whilst the recent delay of “Dune” is being seen as a boon for “Oppenheimer” in the Oscar tech category awards.
Fifth will be “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” with $6.1 million – a drop of just 29% in its fourth week. The film is at $98 million domestically and still has plenty of overseas markets to open in, meaning its $135.1 million global total still has more room to expand.
Sixth is “The Meg 2: The Trench” with $5.1 million – down just 25% in its fourth week. It’s held on fairly well to reach $74.4 million domestically in total. Overseas it’s doing big numbers and is now at a very robust $352.5 million globally.
Dog comedy “Strays” will drop 44% in its second weekend for a $4.65 million haul and seventh place. The Liam Neeson-led “Retribution” debuted on 1750 screens and will take in $3.35 million for eighth.
