DreamWorks Animation’s “The Boss Baby” beat all expectations and opened to an estimated $49 million domestically this weekend along with a further $59 million overseas so far. The Alec Baldwin-led film scored weak reviews, but received an A- CinemaScore from audiences.
Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” came in second place with $47.5 million domestically in its third weekend, and its global total to date is a whopping $876 million. Lionsgate’s “Power Rangers” reboot dropped a fairly steep 64% to fourth place and a $14.5 million second weekend. Its worldwide total now stands at $97.9 million.
The live-action “Ghost in the Shell” remake came in third place with just $19 million domestically and a further $40 million internationally. Reviews were mixed/weak and with a costly $110 million budget, it’s not going to be a profitable film for the studio.
Closing out the top five was “Kong: Skull Island” which currently has a worldwide total of $477.3 million. The other newcomer this week, Niki Caro’s “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” came in tenth with $3.3 million.
