“Borgen” Revived As A Netflix Series

Netflix and Danish state broadcaster DR are teaming up to revive the iconic Danish political drama “Borgen” which became a surprise global hit in the very early 2010s.

While 2007’s “The Killing” (Forbrydelsen) and 2011’s “The Bridge” (Broen) ushered in the Scandi-noir wave (and both subsequently scored weak U.S. remakes for AMC & FX), they and the more politically minded “Borgen” helped redefine the power of how well a non English-language, critically acclaimed, high production value series could do globally.

Series creator Adam Price and star Sidse Babett Knudsen (“Westworld,” “Inferno”) will return, Knudsen will reprise the role of politician Birgitte Nyborg. Other members of the original cast, including Birgitte Hjort Sorensen as Katrine Fonsmark, will also return.

The new eight-episode run will follow Knudsen’s Birgitte, her staff and the media tasked with covering her in the new role as Danish Foreign Minister. Fonsmark, once Nyborg’s head of press, has returned to journalism and is the news director for a major nationwide television station.

The new season will be released globally on the streamer in 2022. Netflix also intends to make the first three seasons of the drama available later this year. Apple has just this week discounted the full three-season boxset to just $9.99 on iTunes.
