Some new interview quotes from several producers have teased the possibility of some frankly highly unnecessary sequels.
First up Queen guitarist Brian May, who shot down the likelihood of a sequel to the biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” last year, says the band is now more open to the idea and are even actively considering it.
Speaking on an Instagram Live session (via NME), May says the band is “looking at ideas” for a follow-up to Bryan Singer’s film:
“We are looking at it. Yeah, we have been looking at ideas. It’s going to be hard to follow that one as none of us could have predicted how massive that was going to be.
We put a lot of heart and soul into making it and no one could have predicted [its success] as it was bigger than ‘Gone with the Wind’. But yes, we are thinking maybe it could happen, but it would have to be a great script. It’s going to take a while to figure that out.”
The first film raked in over $900 million worldwide with Rami Malek winning the Best Actor Oscar for portraying Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. However, the film also had to deal with controversy over Singer’s involvement and a critical backlash.
Next, Variety has done an extensive and interesting interview with prolific producer Gale Anne Hurd at the recent Locarno Film Festival to talk a number of topics.
Her work on “The Terminator” came up and the trade asked in the wake of the fizzling out of “Terminator: Dark Fate,” and the three other poor non-Cameron sequels before it, is there a possibility of (what would be) a seventh film in the franchise. Hurd says:
“Honestly, I have no idea. I wasn’t involved in the last one. To give you some perspective, I used to have a scuba diving practice in Micronesia, and we found that they even screened ‘The Terminator,’ albeit a bootleg video version, of one of the most remote islands in the world. The awareness is already built-in, and I do think it’s a perennial with the right story with the right cast and the right direction. I think there could still be a potential future there.”
In other words, the possibility is there, but nothing is in development at this time.
Finally, producer Charles Roven spoke with THR as part of an extensive profile piece and touched upon “Zack Snyder’s Justice League”. Roven has his hands in all of the DCEU films and when asked what’s coming down the pipeline, he says:
“But [I] still have an affiliation with some more Suicide Squads, which I’m thrilled about. I hope James [Gunn] will, when he’s got some time, come back and see if he’s going to do another one of these, because he did such an amazing job. I would definitely be a part of that. Probably another Justice League, although I think that’s a number of years away.”
Even if another “Justice League” goes ahead, it’s likely going to look a whole lot different from either Joss Whedon’s compromised theatrical cut or Snyder’s more recent and almost operatic epic cut. Which versions of the characters we’ll get is also an obvious unknown.
