Blumhouse announced on Tuesday that it plans to launch Blumhouse Games, a new subsidiary that will produce and publish sub-$10 million budget video games “in the spirit of its film business”.
Blumhouse Games will partner with independent game developers to help bring their creative visions to life with original, horror-themed games for console, PC and mobile platforms. No word as yet if there are any plans to adapt existing Blumhouse properties for the gaming space (eg. “Paranormal Activity: The Game”).
Blumhouse president Abhijay Prakash says this is the start of the company’s jump into the interactive space with the aim being to “enable innovation and push creative boundaries”.
Veteran video-game producer Zach Wood (“Redfall,” “The Unfinished Swan,” “Prey: Mooncrash”) will serve as president whilst former PlayStation executive Don Sechler has been appointed CFO. Wood says:
“Through my time in the industry, I’ve had the good fortune of working closely with developers to bring their ideas to life. There’s a unique opportunity for horror and genre in the indie game space, and I’m thrilled about teaming up with Blumhouse to meaningfully leverage the company’s brand, reputation, and creative talent.”
Blumhouse has produced more than 150 movies and TV series with theatrical grosses totalling over $5 billion to date. A planned merger with James Wan’s Atomic Monster was announced last year and will likely close this Summer.
