Blumhouse In Talks To Buy “Saw” Franchise

Lionsgate

Blumhouse Productions is reportedly once again engaging in talks to snag the rights to the long-running “Saw” horror franchise.

THR reports that Blumhouse is in the midst of a deal to take over the ownership stake of the franchise from Twisted Pictures, the production banner run by Oren Koules and Mark Burg, which is behind the films.

Twisted co-owns the rights with Lionsgate, which has distributed the ten films thus far, ranging from the original 2004 film through to “Saw X” in 2023, which became the only film in the series to score overall positive reviews from critics.

Blumhouse and Twisted began talks last year, which broke down a few months ago over a price tag. Since then, the proposed eleventh film in the franchise has stalled with reports in March this year that the project was dead after the producers started fighting.

If the deal closes, it would return the franchise, at least partly, to the original film’s director James Wan, who co-created the franchise with Leigh Whannell and whose production company Atomic Monster merged with Blumhouse in 2024.

Wan and Whannell also created the “Insidious” franchise at Blumhouse and Sony that is getting a sixth instalment next year, while Wan created “The Conjuring” franchise at Warner Bros. Pictures that will close out with the fourth mainline entry later this year.
