Blumhouse Productions revived “Halloween” with a whole new and successful trilogy, and they’re aiming to do the same with “The Exorcist” franchise starting next month.
But what lies beyond that? According to Blumhouse executive and Jason Blum’s right-hand man Ryan Turek, there’s already one obvious candidate – “Friday the 13th”.
The F13 films spanned eleven entries from the 1980s original, to 2003’s “Freddy vs. Jason”. In 2009, Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes revived the franchise with what ended up being a one-off reboot starring Jared Padalecki and Danielle Panabaker.
The franchise was stuck in a legal quagmire for many years that only recently began to untangle – resulting in Bryan Fuller’s upcoming prequel TV series “Crystal Lake” from A24 and Peacock. The franchise’s film future, however, is less clear.
In an interview with Inverse (via Screen Rant), Turek says that franchise would be the one the studio would like to tackle next. At the same time they’d aim to use an old-school approach focusing on what made the franchise so memorable:
“Jason [Blum] and I are definitely in agreement that Friday the 13th is the thing we would love to get our hands on.
I really want to go back to the basics. You don’t need too many ingredients for a Friday the 13th film. You need summer camp, you need campers, and you need Jason Voorhees in a mask.
Listen, I’ve gone on the record saying Halloween is the ultimate slasher film for me. That’s my favorite slasher film of all time.
But Friday the 13th as a franchise is one that I just bow down to. I just love everything about it. And if we were able to live in both worlds, like we do with Halloween, then to be able to live at Crystal Lake for a while would be so incredible.
A lot would likely depend on “The Exorcist: Believer” and whether audiences are still interested in that franchise. If so, we may end up seeing Jason Voorhees and his machete back in action. For now as much as there is desire at Blumhouse to do so, there are no talks (let alone deals) in place at this time.
