With “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” being the biggest box-office success of the year by far, and with HBO’s “The Last of Us” is both a ratings winner and heavily discussed in pop culture, the industry is finally taking video game-to-film adaptations seriously.
Later this year, genre film powerhouse Blumhouse Productions will release the film adaptation of the horror game “Five Nights at Freddy’s” with the first trailer the other day sparking plenty of conversation on social media.
It joins another game-to-film adaptation in the works at Blumhouse which is teaming with James Wan’s Atomic Monster label on a film version of Behaviour Interactive’s “Dead by Daylight”.
Speaking with Discussing Film this week, producer Jason Blum was asked if more video game adaptations were in the works at Blumhouse? Looks like Blum is very open to the possibility:
“Well, I think the right video games make great source material for movies. I mean, you saw that even with [The Super Mario Bros. Movie]. It’s a different genre, but it was an amazingly successful movie. And I certainly hope that’s the case [with Five Nights at Freddy’s]. James is actually a big gamer and we have a games division of our company that we’ve been working on. I’m definitely looking forward to finding more games that are popular and that we could turn into horror movies.”
Wan recently revealed on Instagram he had spoken with Nicolas Cage about playing Dracula in a now-defunct live-action “Castlevania” movie.
Multiple game-to-film adaptations are on the way from Hollywood and the streaming giants, including the already filmed “Borderlands” and “Gran Turismo” movies, a third “Sonic the Hedgehog,” a “Minecraft” movie, a “Detective Pikachu” sequel, a “Mortal Kombat” sequel, and film adaptations of properties such as “Bioshock,” “Ghost of Tsushima,” “Death Stranding,” “Days Gone,” “Just Cause,” “It Takes Two,” “Yakuza,” “Streets of Rage,” and “Sifu”.
That’s not even getting started on TV adaptations, with “Twisted Metal” about to launch and second seasons of “The Last of Us,” “Arcane” and “Halo” on the way. Also coming is a live-action and anime “Tomb Raider” series, a “Knuckles” series, and major TV series based on properties like “Fallout,” “Mass Effect,” “God of War,” “Horizon: Zero Dawn,” “Gears of War,” “Alan Wake” and “Assassin’s Creed”.
