Todd McFarlane has long been promising a “Spawn” film has been on the way, but beyond his word there hasn’t been a lot of outside comment or movement on the project over the years.
In the comics, Spawn is a human-turned-Hellspawn who possesses superhuman strength and speed, and near immortality. This would mark the third major screen adaptation of the character following 1997’s not well-regarded live-action film from New Line, and 1999’s acclaimed Emmy-winning HBO adult animated series.
McFarlane’s quotes have been up and down on it over time, with the project’s development seemingly gaining momentum only to stall for one reason or another. Now though it looks like things are stirring again, and this time the update comes from another key player – producer Jason Blum.
Blum is currently out doing promotional rounds for Leigh Whannell’s “The Invisible Man” releasing on home video formats this week. During that, he spoke with ComicBook.com and seems excited by the prospect of bringing the famed comics title to life:
“There has been an enormous amount of activity on Spawn. No new news that I’m going to reveal here, I’m sorry to tell you, but the title ‘Spawn,’ I’ve been uttering that word a lot in the last two or three weeks and we’ll have more news to come. But, suffice it to say, it is a very active development. I wanna make the movie so badly, I wouldn’t put that past myself, and it’s an excellent question, but in this case, I’ve actually been talking to other people about it, but there’s been a seismic event on Spawn.”
That certainly doesn’t sound like the film has stalled as it has in times past. At last report from McFarlane, Jamie Foxx was still attached to star in the title role while a major offer was out to someone big (it’s not clear who). A new animated series adaptation was also rumored a few weeks back.
