Universal got a bit too cocky with its planned Dark Universe initiative which would revive their classic monsters franchises in a shared universe.
The failure of that plan’s opening salvo with 2017’s Tom Cruise-led “The Mummy” reboot saw the studio scratch that approach and turn to producer Jason Blum for low-cost and more standalone works based on the properties.
The initiative was successful with its early effort in the form of Leigh Whannell’s “The Invisible Man” and soon after several projects were announced. Den of Geek spoke with Blum recently and asked whether the Dark Universe plan has been retooled and is being retrofitted for these films. Blum says no:
“We have no plans to do that. The way Universal is handling them is they’re just kind of looking at each one individually as one-offs. But I personally love them and we had a great experience on ‘The Invisible Man,’ and I’d love to do more for sure.”
The Ryan Gosling-led new “The Wolfman” and Karyn Kusama’s new take on “Dracula” are both in the works with Blum confirming Kusama is the only attached player at presen to “Dracula”.
