It has taken a full month, but Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has been dethroned at the box-office.
The DC comics adaptation “Blue Beetle” is looking set to open to $25-27 million in North America following a $10 million take on Friday (which includes $3.3 million in previews).
The film is coming in slightly below expectations and looks to have one of the lowest openings ever for a title in the DC Extended Universe.
Nonetheless, it still seems to be enough to push “Barbie” into second, assuming the potential hurricane conditions doesn’t impact grosses in Los Angeles which is Beetle’s top market.
Critics reviews have mostly been good, while the film has earned a B+ CinemaScore with audiences.
“Barbie” ie headed for a fifth-weekend gross of $20-21 million and second place whilst “Oppenheimer” is tracking for third place with a further $11 million and is tracking to reach the $700 million mark globally.
The raunchy dog comedy “Strays” meanwhile is looking to open with a decidedly unimpressive $8.5 million and will struggle to beat “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” for fourth place.
That film has been panned by critics and also earned a B+ CinemaScore from audiences.
