After “The Flash” next week, the next DC Comics adaptation on the way is the “Blue Beetle” film for Warner Bros. Pictures. The title is effectively standalone with no real link to the existing DCEU and any of its baggage.
As such, should it be a critical or commercial success, there doesn’t seem to be much stopping it from becoming a part of the new DC Universe should James Gunn and Peter Safran choose to incorporate it.
“Cobra Kai” alum Xolo Maridueña stars in the film Jamie Reyes, the first stand-alone Latino-led superhero movie with a Mexican American teenager. In the film, he finds himself coming into possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. It bestows with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny.
Speaking about the film recently with Empire, Maridueña says he’s excited for audiences to see his new movie and should they get to the go-ahead to do more, everyone’s ready and keen to get going on it:
“If we get one movie or a trilogy and f—- fold this into the Justice League s—, we’re ready for the whole nine. For me and Angel [Manuel Soto, director] and the team, we kicked ass with this movie. It just depends on numbers.”
George Lopez, Susan Sarandon, Harvey Guillen, Adriana Barraza, Damian Alcazar and Bruna Marquezine co-star in the film, which Angel Manuel Soto helms. The project, originally announced as an HBO Max streaming exclusive before becoming a full theatrical release, opens in cinemas on August 18th.
