Whilst the DC Extended Universe is coming to an end with “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” it first has the mostly standalone “Blue Beetle” movie – one which will potentially see its star Xolo MaridueƱa carry on the character into the future.
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “BLUE BEETLE”
Thus, aside from the actor as the character, it’s not clear if anything in the new movie might carry forward to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe initiative, be it the supporting cast or lingering plot elements.
Intriguingly the film boasts two stinger scenes in the credits – one which embraces the cast and crew’s love for the character’s Mexican heritage, and the other teasing that the young hero will be back.
Inverse has posted a breakdown of the two scenes. The first scene returns to former Blue Beetle Ted Kord’s abandoned superhero headquarters where a computer turns on by itself, and we hear his voice saying to tell his daughter Jenny (Bruna Marquezine) heās alive and has been stranded somewhere for many years.
The clip sets up a potential sequel that would see Jenny and Jaime track down her father and could also see two Blue Beetles team up on screen. How any of this could tie into Gunn and Safranās new DCU storyline is not clear.
The second end-credits scene shows an animated version of El ChapulĆn Colorado, the Mexican superhero character who had his own series that ran for eight seasons and 260 episodes. The short animation has some fun as it explains to the public how the character is “more agile than a turtle, stronger than a mouse, nobler than a lettuce.”
The film’s director Ćngel Manuel Soto has teased to the outlet that the return of Ted Kordās Blue Beetle means Soto also wants to bring in Ted Kordās best friend – Booster Gold.
We do know Gunn is a big Booster Gold fan, and that character is getting a new TV series in the DCU. Soto tells the outlet: “That mid-credit scene is cool because we don’t have to promise nor deny the possibilities of this collaboration.”
“Blue Beetle” opens in cinemas tomorrow.
