“Blue Beetle” Faces Rough Early Projections

Warner Bros. Pictures

The first box-office tracking figures for the upcoming DC superhero movie “Blue Beetle” have been released by Box-Office Pro and it’s looking like a slow start for the film.

The outlet reports that the film is currently tracking to earn $12-17 million in its domestic opening weekend box office from August 18th-20th. That’s a very low figure for a superhero movie and well behind both “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” and “The Flash” which debuted to $30 million and $55 million, respectively.

Both those films are considered major box office bombs. “Blue Beetle” is thankfully more cost-efficient, but its budget of $120 million means it has to perform quite well in order to achieve profitability. Still, these are early tracking figures and thus could change – especially if Warners chooses to promote the film harder closer to release.

The film begins when Jaime Reyes graduates from college and returns to his hometown Palmera City. He is chosen to become a symbiotic host to the Scarab, an ancient alien biotechnological relic that grants him a powerful exoskeleton armor, turning him into the superhero Blue Beetle.

The project marks the second last of the previous regime’s DC films, the last being James Wan’s costly “Aquaman” sequel, due out in December.

Xolo Maridueña, Susan Sarandon, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, and Becky G. co-star in “Blue Beetle”, which is coming exclusively to cinemas on August 18th.
