Blomkamp: “District 10” On Indefinite Hold

Sony Pictures

Filmmaker Neil Blomkamp exploded onto the scene with the sci-fi feature “District 9” in 2009. Since then, however, the South African filmmaker hasn’t had as much success.

His 2013 follow-up “Elysium” proved divisive, his 2015 third film “Chappie” was outright panned, and few saw his 2021 sci-fi feature “Demonic”.

Now he returns with the “Gran Turismo” film adaptation, which has been playing previews for the past two weeks and gets a wide theatrical release today.

During promotional rounds for the film, he spoke with THR about the possibility of a “District 10,” the sequel to “District 9,” which has been floating around as a possibility ever since the success of the original film.

In 2021 development of said sequel seemed to garner some heat, but now Blomkamp tells THR that any movement on the project has stalled:

“I don’t know if it’s getting made or not. I don’t know if I even want to make that right now, but at some point down the line, it’ll probably get made.”

The comments follow on from an infamous interview Blomkamp did with Uproxx the other week, which saw him slam the “Alien” franchise – a series he was once keen to be involved in.

“Gran Turismo” is now in cinemas worldwide.
