The highly anticipated historical drama “Judas and the Black Messiah” will have its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The Shaka King-helmed film deals with the life and assassination of Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya). Lakeith Stanfield, Jesse Plemons and Lil Rel Howery co-star.
The splashy premiere takes place on Monday February 1st, a few days before the film launches simultaneously in select cinemas and on HBO Max on Friday February 12th.
The release strategy is seen as a big shot to get the film into awards season talk as the film’s release prior to the end of February will allow it to qualify to compete in this year’s Oscar race.
The documentary “Captains of Zaatari” has also been added to the Sundance lineup and will debut in the world doc competition.
