“Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris and “The Goldbergs” executive producer Alex Barnow are teaming to pen the script for a new reboot of 1970s blaxploitation franchise “Shaft” at New Line.
Richard Roundtree starred in the original as a private detective hired to find a missing girl in Harlem, and became iconic for several reasons including Isaac Hayes’ soundtrack.
John Singleton starred in a 2000 reboot with Samuel L. Jackson in the role which was actually the nephew of the character. Whilst that one had a relatively serious tone, this new one is said to be more comedic.
John Davis and Ira Napoliello will produce the new version. Davis opens another franchise reboot – “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” – in two weeks.
