The proposed Sam Cooke biopic is making headway it seems with ABKCO, the company that owns the bulk of Cooke’s master recordings and publishing rights, currently seeking a director reports Reuters.
Scribes Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais (“The Commitments,” “Killing Bono”) recently completed their script adaptation of “Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke,” Peter Guralnick’s definitive biography in 2005 of the man widely regarded as the first significant R&B performer to appeal to multi-generational and multi-racial audiences.
The script is said to cover his entire life 1931 to 1964 including his years as a gospel singer, pop star, civil rights activist and music publisher before being shot dead in 1964. ABKCO will self-finance the project.
