Big “Smile” At Box-Office, “Bros” Falters

Paramount Pictures

Parker Finn’s horror feature “Smile” scared up a strong $8.2 million from on Friday (including $2 million in previews).

That puts the interestingly viral marketed film on track for a projected $19 million opening – ahead of expectations and more than its $17 million production budget. The film is being helped by good reviews too.

On the flip side Universal Pictures’ first gay romantic comedy from a major Hollywood studio is falling decidedly short. Clocking up just $1.8 million on Friday, the film is on track for a fourth place debut with $4.8 million.

That is around half the amount cited in projections earlier ths week. Reviews have been excellent though, and the CinemaScore audience exit poll has given the film a strong ‘A’ which suggests it should have legs.

With the lure of controversy and Harry Styles sex appeal over, Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling” is dropping fast. The film earned $2.4 million on Friday and is headed for a projected $7.4 million weekend – a fall of 62%. “The Woman King” in its third weekend will come in third with $6.2 million.

The “Avatar” re-release is also still going well and is projected to earn $4.2 million for its second weekend.
