Former “Y Tu Mama Tambien” co-stars Gael GarcĂa Bernal and Diego Luna are re-teaming, this time as executive producers on the upcoming and currently untitled big-budget Amazon and Amblin Entertainment mini-series about Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes and Aztec Emperor Moctezuma II.
First announced last year, Javier Bardem is attached to star as Cortes in the story of how he led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire and brought large portions of what is now mainland Mexico under the rule of Spain – kicking off the first phase of the Spanish colonization of the Americas.
The four-episode limited series boasts scripts by Steven Zaillian based on a screenplay by Dalton Trumbo. Zaillian and Bardem will executive produce along with Bernal, Luna, Kirk Douglas, Grant Hill, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey.
Ciro Guerra and Cristina Gallego (“Birds of Passage,” “Embrace of the Serpent”) are now attached to direct all four episodes of the series and are joined by production designer Eugenio Caballero (“Pan’s Labyrinth”), costume designer Anna Terrazas (“Spectre”), and casting director Luis Rosales (“Roma”).
