The other week came the news that Paramount Pictures had acquired the film rights to the “Call of Duty” franchise.
With that came the news that a “Call of Duty” movie was in the works, penned by “Yellowstone” creator and “Sicario” scribe Taylor Sheridan and co-written and directed by “Lone Survivor” and “Deepwater Horizon” filmmaker Peter Berg.
That’s about all we knew. Today comes word from scooper DanielRPK (via GameFragger) that the film is expected to begin shooting next year and will have a modern-day setting – fitting with talk that this will be inspired by the “Modern Warfare” branch of the games.
Their insider also says “Berg [is] already eyeing some of his usual stars for roles.” This has led to speculation as to who might make that list, with names like Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, and John Malkovich being possibilities.
Previously, Paramount and Activision said the plan is “to thrill its massive global fan base by delivering on the hallmarks of what players love about the games” while also “expanding the franchise to entirely new audiences.”
Paramount CEO David Ellison previously suggested they’re hoping to deliver something akin to “Top Gun: Maverick” in terms of both quality and success.
