The showdown between this week’s two new releases – horror comedy “Cocaine Bear” and faith-based “Jesus Revolution” – has turned into both becoming big winners that are exceeding projections.
“Cocaine Bear,” which had been tracking for a $15 million debut, is now on course for an impressive $23 million bow in second place. The film earned a further $5.3 million overseas, and with a roughly $35 million budget it’s looking to be a winner for Universal.
In third place, Lionsgate’s religious drama “Jesus Revolution” more than doubled projections from early last week – debuting to a very impressive $15.5 million. The film, about the 1970s California evangelical Christian movement, made back its production budget on opening weekend.
Eyes were all on the drop of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” which on Friday was looking to be the worst box-office drop of any superhero film.
Well it wasn’t quite as bad as with $32.2 million in its second weekend. The drop-off at 69% was still brutal and still an MCU worst to date, but now it shares the honor of the worst $100M opening superhero film second-weekend drop with “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”. Globally, the movie has generated $364 million to date – $167 million domestic & $196 million international.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” rounded out the top five with a little over $4 million each – the former now sitting at $2.267 billion worldwide whilst the latter stands at $442 million.
Comscore says the overall box-office is 47% ahead of the same time last year, and with the likes of “Creed III,” “Scream VI,” “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” and “John Wick: Chapter 4” ready to drop – there’s no sign of it slowing down.
