Filmmakers Michael Bay, Patrick Hughes and Gareth Evans are all teaming up for a reimagining of Evans’ iconic 2011 Indonesian action film “The Raid” at Netflix and XYZ Films.
Evans directed the original film about an elite Indonesian S.W.A.T. team that becomes trapped in a run-down apartment building run by a ruthless mobster living in the penthouse and populated by his personal army of killers and thugs.
The film scored raves out of its western premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in 2011. Sony Pictures Classics then acquired the film and released it in 2012 with a sequel following in 2014.
Talk of a remake has swirled since the first was screened, but nothing has ever really come of it until now. The reimagining will be set in Philadelphia’s drug-infested ‘Badlands’ where an elite undercover DEA task force climbs a ladder of cartel informants to catch an elusive kingpin.
Hughes (“The Hitman’s Bodyguard”) will direct the new take with Bay producing and Evans executive producing. Hughes and James Beaufort will pen the script.
