For some time now there has been development on a potential film adaptation of Microsoft’s “Gears of War” gaming franchise.
Set on the planet Sera, the game thrusts players into a battle for survival between humans and a race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet known as the Locust Horde. Players assume identities of soldiers on Delta Squad as they fight to save Sera’s inhabitants.
Late last year “xXx: Return of Xander Cage” writer F. Scott Frazier came onboard to pen the screenplay for the project which was setup at Universal Pictures and previously had “Breakdown” scribe Shane Salerno penning the adaptation. The likes of Len Wiseman, Chris Morgan, and Billy Ray have also been attached at different points as director when the project was previously set-up at New Line.
However there doesn’t seem to have been much in the way of serious progress. One person trying to push it forward has been “Stuber” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” star Dave Bautista. Bautista bears a strong resemblance to lead character Marcus Fenix, fans have been calling for his casting for some time, and the actor himself has called the character a “dream role” for him to play.
This week, Bautista took to Twitter to reveal he’s been working hard to make it happen, but so far he’s had no luck. He tweeted out: “They [Hollywood] are listening. And they could give AF [‘eyeroll emoji’]… [B]ut thank you for the support. Believe me when I say I’ve tried everything to make this happen.”
Dylan Clark and Rod Fergusson will produce. The games have generated $1 billion in sales since the first game debuted in 2006, and is considered Microsoft’s second-biggest exclusive franchise behind only the “Halo” series. A fifth main title in the series hits in September.
