In a very welcome bit of news for disc enthusiasts, one of the best Batman films ever made – 1993’s “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” – is coming to 4K UHD disc in time for its 30th anniversary.
For over twenty years, it was the only theatrically released film to come out of the iconic original 1990s “Batman: The Animated Series”. The cult classic has long been one of the most highly acclaimed works from the Dini & Timm era of Batman on screen.
Working effectively as a standalone, the story begins when some of Gotham City’s most feared gangsters are systematically eliminated by a sinister figure called the Phantasm.
At the same time, Bruce (Kevin Conroy) reconciles with his former lover Andrea Beaumont (Dana Delany). As the authorities blame Batman and hunt him down, and the criminals who think they are next enlist the help of The Joker (Mark Hamill), Batman must find the truth about the mysterious vigilante.
Though only in cinemas for a brief period where it didn’t take off at the box-office, its big success on home video led to other direct-to-video releases – none of which were ever quite able to recapture the magic at work here.
The two-disc set will be released on September 12th in HDR10 with a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track.
