Jay Baruchel (“This Is The End”) and Glenn Howerton (“AP Bio”) are leading the cast of “BlackBerry,” a film about the meteoric rise and catastrophic fall of the world’s first smartphone.

“Operation Avalanche” director Matt Johnson helms the project that he co-wrote with Matthew Miller based on the 2015 book “Losing the Signal” by journalists Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff.

The film will revolve around the business relationship between co-founders Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie as their Canadian company Research in Motion released the once-ubiquitous device, which floundered in legal disputes and lost its market advantage to competitors such as Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy range.

Cary Elwes, Saul Rubinek, Rich Sommer, Martin Donovan and Michael Ironside co-star in the film that has just wrapped production. Co-financier XYZ Films will introduce the project to buyers in Toronto next month.
