Emmy nominee Kenya Barris and Oscar nominee Pharrell Williams are in talks with Netflix to develop a feature-length musical about Juneteenth, the commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.
The trio is reportedly in early stages coming up with a plan for the project, but details of the storyline are under wraps. Williams, Barris and Mimi Valdes will produce.
Virginia, New York and Texas have now recognised Juneteenth as a state holiday with Williams and Barris both campaigning for it to become a national holiday. The date celebrates June 19th 1865 – the day General Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce that slaves were now free.
