Stanley Kubrick’s estate has given its blessing for the new “Barbie” teaser trailer.
Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated film released its first trailer earlier today, with much of it primarily a parody of the opening act of Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” homage – all to a voiceover by Helen Mirren narrating the origin story of Barbie dolls.
The reaction has been all over the place, with some offering adoration, and others confused and wondering if the film’s target market is potentially too young to get the classic film reference.
In any case, the official Twitter and Facebook accounts for Stanley Kubrick, run by the filmmaker’s estate, have shared the trailer with the message: “They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! Even Barbie is a Kubrick fan.”
Said accounts normally document Kubrick’s works, exhibits and events, such as a book launch at Kubrick’s estate earlier this week, marking a rare commentary on pop culture from the channels.
Gerwig and Noah Baumbach pen the “Barbie” film, which stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Will Ferrell and many more in what aims to be both a homage to the brand along with a skewering social satire.
