With “Barbie” currently hovering at around $1.2 billion at the worldwide box-office, it’s unsurprising that those responsible are set to reap the benefits.
According to several sources for Variety the film’s star and producer Margot Robbie stands to make up to roughly $50 million in salary and box office bonuses combined.
It’s also expected director and co-writer Greta Gerwig will also likely receive bonuses due to the film’s outsized success, which has turned it into the highest-grossing film ever from a female director.
It’s also the second highest-grossing release in the history of Warner Bros. Pictures, behind only “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2”.
Robbie has had multiple major hits in the past, but nothing on the level of this, and looks set to overtake “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” at $1.36 billion to become the highest grosser of the year. It’s also within spitting distance of “Top Gun: Maverick” at $1.5 billion.
Robbie produced the film through her LuckyChap Entertainment label, which has resulted in works like “Promising Young Woman,” “Birds of Prey” and “Maid”.
As reported earlier this month, there are apparently no deals in place for a sequel, and so if one goes ahead, those involved will have to renegotiate new deals and likely higher returns.
