Today will see Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” overtake Universal and Illumination Entertainment’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” to become the highest-grossing title at the 2023 domestic box office.
This will mark the first time Warner Bros. Pictures has scored the top-grossing movie of the year since 2011 when “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II” managed $381 million domestically.
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” pulled in a total of $574.2 million in North America over its entire release, a number it took 138 days to reach in cinemas.
To put that in perspective, last year’s sensation “Top Gun: Maverick” achieved that milestone in approximately 40 days of release – a much faster rate. “Barbie” has beaten them both though, reaching that mark after just 34 days.
This fits with how the films have been doing so far – “Barbie” hit $500 million domestically in 22 days compared to Maverick’s 30 and Super Mario’s 31.
It’s not expected any of the film’s coming out this Fall will be able to match the phenomenon that “Barbie” has been. “Barbie” will likely overtake “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” worldwide haul in coming weeks.
How it’ll fare against the totals ‘Maverick’ pulled in is less clear. That film made $718.7 million domestically and $777 million overseas. “Barbie” currently sits at $713.3 million overseas and will likely beat Maverick’s record there, but it may not be able to reach it domestically.
