“Barbie” Has A Monday Box-Office Boom

Warner Bros. Pictures

Warner Bros. Pictures and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie scored the best Monday domestic gross in the studio’s history – the title pulling in $26.1 million.

That beats the previous record of $24.6 million held by “The Dark Knight” and the thirteenth biggest Monday of all time, just ahead of “Jurassic World” with $25.3 million.

The Monday haul follows its $162 million domestic opening weekend which was the highest opening of 2023. The movie is expected to surpass $200 million in North America alone today, and has already passed $400 million internationally.

The rosy box-office comes as some conservative media figures have taken issue with the film’s themes, including Ben Shapiro and Ted Cruz, even Elon Musk, who’ve complained about the film taking aim at the patriarchy. Shapiro adds that: “repeat business is going to be nonexistent”.

Meanwhile Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Oppenheimer” also fared well, pulling in $12.6 million the third-best Monday for Nolan after “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises”.

That number also beat the first Monday of Disney and Lucasfilm’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” which made $11.7 million on July 3rd. “Oppenheimer” is expected to pass the $100 million domestic mark today.
