Looks like the rosier end of early projections for the Barbenheimer event still weren’t enough.
With Friday day numbers in, Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Barbie” movie is eyeing a $68-70 million opening day (which includes $22 million in Thursday night previews).
As of now, the film is tracking to have the best domestic opening weekend of the year with $150 million over the three days – beating out “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” which made $146.3 million.
Some are projecting even higher, but it’s too early to call at this point, and it’s not clear how front-loaded that figure for the weekend is.
Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is no slouch. The R-rated three-hour adult drama is headed for a $32 million opening day (which includes $10.5 million in previews).
As such, the film has also been revised upwards with a $75 million opening weekend now looking likely – that’s well above the $60.3 million that “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” pulled in.
Even better? The two juggernauts aren’t cannibalising other titles. “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” is coming in third and is on track for a $25 million weekend after taking $6.6 million on Friday. That would be a second-weekend drop of 54% – not bad.
Indie title “Sound of Freedom” keeps powering along too, and is headed for a $20 million third weekend – a drop of just 26%. The fifth Indy is expected to close out the top five with a fourth weekend of $7 million.
